PSA on “Indy” vs “Indiana”

    PSA on “Indy” vs “Indiana”

    I continue to see this come up with us being talked about more. Wanted to clear things up.

    INDY ≠ INDIANA UNIVERSITY

    It’s the same as calling Penn State “Penn”, Ohio State “Ohio”, Michigan “Big Blue”, the city of Pittsburgh “Pitt”. You’re talking about something else.

    When you say “Indy” you are referring to one of maybe 9 things, nearly all pertaining to the city of Indianapolis:

        Indy = Indianapolis (City)

        Indy = Indianapolis Colts (Indianapolis NFL Team)

        Indy = Indiana Pacers (Indianapolis NBA Team)

        Indy = Indycar (Racing Series)

        Indy = Indy 500 (Race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway)

        Indy = Indiana Fever (Indianapolis WNBA Team)

        Indy = Indy Eleven (Indianapolis USL Team)

        Indy = Indy Fuel (Indianapolis ECHL Team)

        Indy = Indiana Jones (Fictional Character)

    Indy does NOT mean Indiana University.

    If you need something shorter than the four syllables of “Indiana” to say, there’s “IU” or “Hoosiers”.

    We are not a racing series, an NFL franchise, a city, or Harrison Ford with a hat and a whip.
